1. Heritage Arts Traveling Exhibit on display all next week at LOB

CONCORD – Learn about dog sledding, blacksmithing, contra dancing and more next week, when a traveling exhibit that celebrates some of the music and craft traditions of New Hampshire is on display at the Legislative Office Building. “Discovering Heritage Arts in New Hampshire” will be up in the garage lobby of the Legislative Office Building, located at 33 North State St., across from the State House, April 6 through 10. Open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the exhibit is drawn from educational activities on the New Hampshire Folklife Web site (www.nh.gov/folklife). The Web site is an educational resource developed by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts’ Traditional Arts Program.

The exhibit focuses on eight traditional art forms: ash basket making; sheep shearing and spinning; stone wall building; blacksmithing; fly tying; dog sled making; contra dance and music; and French Canadian soirée music. Original artworks were commissioned from New Hampshire illustrators and text panels were developed to help identify words for processes, forms and tools unique to each tradition.

The related activities on the New Hampshire Folklife Web site are called Heritage Arts Build-A-Pictures Activities. They are designed for young people third grade and up and, can be especially helpful to teachers of all grade levels who are covering units on New Hampshire history. The Heritage Arts Build-A-Pictures Activities were developed by the Traditional Arts Program and the unique interactive functionality of the pages was developed by the Department of Information Technology's Web Support Division.

2. Operating Grant Deadline is April 9; Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Deadline is April 20

The deadline is fast approaching for nonprofit organizations to apply to the State Arts Council for operating grants. The grants, for one or two years, may be made for up to $16,000 a year, with a required match. Traditional artists and experienced students of traditional arts may apply for apprenticeship grants of up to $3,400 by April 20. 3. “Beyond Brown Paper” Opens Sunday in Berlin

The “Beyond Brown Paper” exhibit, funded in part by the State Arts Council, opens at the St. Kieran Arts Center in Berlin from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 5. Guest speakers will be on hand at 2 p.m. The interactive exhibition features selected prints from the Brown Company Photographic Collection at Plymouth State University, which documents and celebrates life in the paper industry in Berlin. For information, call 752-1028.
